A Passage to India is a 1984 film directed by David Lean, based on the novel of the same name by E. M. Forster.

The film won Academy Awards for: Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Peggy Ashcroft) and Best Music, Original Score. It was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Judy Davis), Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Director, Best Film Editing, Best Picture, Best Sound and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium.

Salman Rushdie critiqued this film in his famous essay, "Outside the Whale."

Plot

The plot describes the consequences of false allegations of sexual advances by a physician toward a young lady. The physician is rather unassuming yet admiring character of the British ruling class. He also happens to be a widow and a Muslim.

The lady, who belongs to the British elite, has doubts about her pending marriage. She suffers altered mental status from a febrile illness. This precludes her from clearing the doctor's name in the intial stage of publically humiliating trial. Eventually, however, the lady in question clears the accused despite the social upheaval from her own people.

The story illustrates clashes between different cultures. For example, the above self propagated events initially get complicated by inflammatory background of the Indian independence movement.
