| Ada Clare was born circa 1836 in Charleston, South Carolina as Jane McElhenney. As a teenager, she grew up under the care of her maternal grandfather, but started her career as a writer around age 18, writing under the pseudonyms Clare and later Ada Clare. She wrote columns on a litany of subjects for a succession of newspapers, and also succeeded in acting, becoming one of the most popular stage actresses of her time. Known as "The Queen of Bohemia," Clare was the proud mother of an illegitimate son with composer and pianist Louis Moreau Gottschalk, and may have had an affair with poet Walt Whitman. Clare died from the bite of a rabid dog in New York City on March 4, 1874. ---- Ada Clare is also a character in the novel Bleak House by Charles Dickens.
