Alberto Sordi (June 15 1920, Rome - February 25 2003, Rome) was an Italian actor and director, one of the most popular in his country. He was also the voice of Oliver Hardy in the Italian version of the Laurel & Hardy films.

Sordi acted in more than 150 movies during his life; mainly in comedic roles, where he used the Roman dialect to express the typical Roman people. His specialty roles were either those of the lackluster curmudgeon trying to drive around troubles and complications while getting mired deeper and deeper in them or the one of the conniving schemer cynically pursuing success at others' expense. These roles were hugely successful with the Italian public, who love to root for the underdog or to revile those who have success by playing dirty. Albeit sometimes, especially in Luigi Comencini's movies he played roles in which he finally answered to a higher call, shedding his egotistic persona for example in Tutti a Casa he was an Italian Army NCO of WWII who, after a series of adventures, finally stands his ground as a resistance fighter to expel the Germans from Naples in the four day insurgency of 1943 Quattro Giornate di Napoli.
