| Anna Jullienne is a New Zealand born actress. She is perhaps best known for her role as Maia Jefferies in New Zealand's popular show, Shortland Street. Anna's character, Maia, is perhaps the most interesting and beloved characters as she is a beautiful and young nurse who is in fact a lesbian. Though this is somewhat controversial, the character has a strong cult following and is amongst the most loved characters on the show — and her relationship with fellow worker Jay Copeland (played by Jamie Passier-Armstrong). Apart from her controversial, yet highly loved character, Anna has also had lead roles in such productions such as Amadeus, Julius Caesar and Anything Goes, in which she gained success from. In fact, it was her roles in these performances that gained her several honourary mentions and eventually a role in Shortland Street. Like many actors and actresses, Anna had a passion and desire to do acting from a young age. This of course lead her to drama classes in which she enjoyed thoroughly. No stranger to success outside of the world of drama and acting, Anna also is the holder of an ATCL Teacher Practical Certificate in which she acquired from the Trinity College of London Drama Examination. She also studied camera techniques as well. In addition to her studies, she also studied the languages of French and Japanese (in which she can fluently speak and understand). In her spare time, she enjoys riding, playing sports, and surfing. She also enjoys playing physical sports and is good at gymnastics. Currently, she is still working on Shortland Street. She resides in Taranaki, New Zealand. ControversyBecause Anna Jullienne plays a character of a lesbian, her on screen relationship with character Jay Copeland has been met with controversy, although the overall response to the angle has been of high praise and positive. On April the 26th 2005, the controversial Civil Union Act came into fruition, which allowed both heterosexual- and homosexual couples- to register their relationships in an official way. This act would lead to a controversial angle in the storyline in which Maia and Jay were to get married, and perhaps have a baby as well. This of course was sure to set public outrage by those against the act, but so far the public was in support of both the act and the angle. This situation was even supported by Jaime Passier-Armstrong, who believed that it was important to mirror the actual happenings of reality in society; claiming that "it would be wrong to display something on TV that only favoured heterosexuals and not homosexuals". Currently Shortland Street's first civil union is set to take place on February 14th 2006. It is believed that on this day Shortland Street will in fact feature the once rumored wedding of Maia and Jay. Trivia
