Born in 1979, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Anthony Mackie has emerged as a distinguished character actor and lesser-known leading man. At the age of 27, Mackie has been featured in fourteen films and been on three television series. Mackie also frequently acts in off Broadway plays, but still manages to stay out of the spotlight, despite apparent talent. A graduate of Julliard College, Mackie has worked as an understudy for two of the most respected actors of his generation (Jeffrey Wright and Don Cheadle). The first real chance for Mackie to emerge as a star was taking the leading role, in the critically panned Spike Lee film She Hate Me. However since the failure of that movie, he has worked with Morgan Freeman in the Oscar Winner for best picture, Clint Eastwood's, Million Dollar Baby. He continues to take challenging roles, and this year was featured strongly at the Sundance Film Festival, costarring witth Ryan Gosling in Half Nelson. As he has said on many ocassions, quoting Freeman , “Just do the work. When Hollywood wants you, they’ll come get you.” This seems to be the path Mackie will continue as his career grows.
