Boys Don't Cry is a 1999 movie based on the real-life story of Brandon Teena, a young transgender man who was raped and murdered by his male friends, after they found out he was physically female. Hilary Swank's performance as Brandon Teena earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1999.

The film is set in the Lincoln, Nebraska area, but was filmed in the Dallas, Texas area. It came out around the time of the murder of gay teen Matthew Shepard, which added to its interest.

One of the interesting things about Swank's portrayal of Brandon is a mix of sympathy and mild scorn for the character. While Brandon is undoubtedly shown in a sympathetic light — his brutal fate, for example, being clearly advocated against — he is also shown as a flawed human. He is thoughtful towards some, thoughtless of others, he is bold, he is immature, and he is definitely too desiring of acceptance for his own good.

Boys Don't Cry was written by Kimberly Peirce and Andy Bienen and directed by Peirce. Besides Swank, it also stars Chloë Sevigny, Peter Sarsgaard, Brendan Sexton, Alicia Goranson and Jeanetta Arnette. Sevigny was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

The title song, "Boys Don't Cry", was written and performed by The Cure in 1980 and was also the title song of the album Boys Don't Cry. A cover version of it, performed by Nathan Larson, appears at the moment when Swank's character is released from jail and rejoins his waiting girlfriend. They run down a set of stairs as the song continues.
