| Central do Brasil (Central Station) is a Brazilian film from 1998. The movie was adapted by Marcos Bernstein and João Emanuel Carneiro from a story by Walter Salles. It was directed by Salles. The movie stars Fernanda Montenegro and Vinícius de Oliveira. The film is initially set in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Montenegro plays a bitter old woman, Dora, an ex school teacher who now writes letters for illiterates at the Central do Brasil train station. Though she does not send them, she just puts them in a drawer, or even tears them apart. When one of her customers is killed in an accident at the station, she reluctantly takes the customer's young son, Josué (played by Vinicius de Oliveira), and with him embark on a journey to find his father. The film was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Montenegro) and for Best Foreign Language Film.
