Diane Brewster (1931-1991) was an American television actress most noted for her role as Samantha Crawford in the 1957 television series Maverick, a sophisticated western with James Garner and Jack Kelly. Brewster's character was a gorgeous gambling con artist who often faked a southern accent. Jodie Foster's character in the Mel Gibson movie version was based on Samantha Crawford, who was named after writer/producer Roy Huggins' mother's maiden name. Brewster had actually first played the character in one episode of Cheyenne, another western series (the episode was "Dark Rider"), before showing up in the third episode of Maverick, "According to Hoyle." Brewster's other Maverick appearances include the episodes "The Savage Hills" with Jack Kelly, "The Seventh Hand" with James Garner, and "Shady Deal At Sunny Acres" with Kelly. Including the Cheyenne episode, Brewster played Samantha Crawford only five times but she made an indelible impression on critics and viewers.

Diane Brewster also portrayed the schoolteacher on Leave It to Beaver for the run of the series (a role she also played in the later TV revivals). Brewster made almost 50 appearances in various TV series in the 1950s and 1960s, as well as playing a number of movie roles. As a favor to Roy Huggins, Brewster appeared several times with no screen credit as murdered wife Helen Kimble in the TV series The Fugitive. Brewster died of heart failure in 1991.
