Edward Speleers will be playing the lead role in "Eragon," the adaptation of Christopher Paolini's fantasy novel. Edward Speleers is a 17-year-old public schoolboy, with no acting experience beyond amateur school productions. Despite this, Speelers won over the most coveted role of the year. Edward Speleers is a boarder at Eastbourne College and beat out 180,000 hopefuls to land the title role of the multi-million pound screen version of the novel. Eragon knocked Harry Potter off the top of the best-seller list two years ago. "You could say that Ed is Eastbourne College's leading man. He's just got this amazing charisma," his drama teacher Tim Marriot says. "Recently he's played Richard III and Hamlet in school plays." Edward is the only child of Essex-based financial consultant John Speleers, 62, who is divorced from his mother, now living in Spain.

20th Century Fox is eyeing a December 15, 2006 release date (subject to change) for the Stefen Fangmeier-directed film.
