Farhan Akhtar is an emerging contemporary Indian film director. He is the son of very well known poet and lyricist, Javed Akhtar and renowned screenplay writer, Honey Irani. He is also the grandson of Urdu poet, Jan Nisar Akhtar. He made his debut into Hindi cinema with the 2001 blockbuster hit, Dil Chahta Hai. He then moved onto his next project, Lakshya with Hrithik Roshan. Though the movie eluded success in the box office, the movie won him a lot of critical acclaim. His sister, Zoya Akhtar, is also turning director with a film that is currently under production.

Farhan Akhtar said that when he left college, he spent about two years at home and did nothing productive. During those two years, he watched about two films daily. Akhtar said that it was this period of his life which allowed him to connect with Karan Shergill, the protagonist of Lakshya
which film Akhtar directed, begins with Karan as a young, unemployed slacker who stays at home, sleeps late, and has no ambition or aim in life.
