Actors - Ghosts

Ghosts is a feature film by Michael Jackson
which could also be classified as a long-form music video. It was filmed and first screened in 1996 and released a year later on VHS. The film tells a story of a scary maestro with supernatural powers, who is being forced out of town by the town mayor. The movie includes a series of dance rountines performed by Michael Jackson and his "family" of ghouls. Every song from the film was taken from Michael Jackson's HIStory
and Blood on the Dance Floor
albums.

Plot summary

Michael Jackson plays a maestro who lives alone in a creepy-looking mansion on top of a hill. Occasionally, he goes down to the town ("Normal Valley") and entertains the children with scary magic tricks. One of the children tell their mother, who alerts the town mayor (also played by Michael Jackson), who organises the townspeople to go to the maestro's mansion and force him out of town. On a stormy night they go to the maestro's mansion (which instead of a numbered address, is addressed "Someplace Else") holding flaming torches. When they arrive at the mansion, it is guarded by a large gate. They peer in through the gate, and by the haunting look of the mansion, have second thought about entering. The children assure the parents that the maestro has done nothing wrong, so they should all leave him alone. But the mayor remarks, "He's a weirdo, and there's no place in this town for weirdos". The large gate creeps open by its own will, which frightens most of the townspeople. They make their way to the front door, which also opens by itself. The inside of the mansion looks even creepier than the outside, and the parents re-assure their children "there's no such thing as ghosts". They make their way into the house and once they are all inside, the front door slams shut and locks itself. Two large doors swing open by themselves and behind the doors is what appears to be a large dance floor. Hesitantly, the townspeople make their way through the doors and onto the dance floor, where they are greeted by the maestro who makes a scary and comical entrance. The mayor confronts him, telling him he is "weird", a "freak", and not welcome in their town. The maestro defends himself, and in response the mayor threatens "are you going to leave, or am I going to have to make you?" To this the meastro replies, "You're trying to scare me, aren't you?...I guess I have no choice, I have to try and scare you." He makes a series of funny faces, which the mayor says "is ridiculous" and "not funny". But then the maestro gets serious and says in a deep, scary voice, "Is this scary?" and pulls his face off to reveal a skeletal head. The townspeople get scared and run for the doors, but the maestro shuts the doors with his magical power. He smashes his skull with his fist, which breaks off and reveals his normal head. The maestro then introduces his family of ghouls who, with the maestro, perform a series of dance rountines to original music composed by Michael Jackson, which impresses the townspeople. The maestro then performs a series of terrifying acts, which include ripping his skin off to reveal a skeletal body, taking over the mayor's body and making him dance, and transforming the mayor's face into an ugly, horrific face and remarking, "Who's the freak now?" After his series of scary acts he asks, "Do you still want me to leave?" While the townspeople are saying "no", the mayor says "yes", so Jackson says "OK then, I'll leave." He falls to the floor, his face and body start to crumble away until all that remains is dust on the floor, which is blown away by the wind. The townspeople are saddened by this, and somewhat sorry to see him go. The mayor thinks he has come out victorious and heads for the doors. When he opens them he finds a monstrous-looking head which terrifies him. He runs away scared, and either on purpose or accidentally, falls through a window and presumably dies. The townspeople then turn to the now open doors to see the maestro standing there laughing. They realise he isn't so bad after all and make peace with him. The story ends with one of the children asking, "Is this scary?" while the camera moves to a long shot of the mansion and terrified screams are heard.
