| Gordon Chater was a comedian and actor who was born on 6 April, 1922, in London, England. He died on December 13, 1999 at the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. Chater attended Cambridge University to study to become a doctor but took part in many student revues there and did not finish his degree. He arrived in Australia following World War II. He was a member of the Australian satirical television series The Mavis Bramston Show, as well as appearing in starring roles in My Name's McGooley, What's Yours? and other television comedy series. His fellow actors have included Ray Barrett and Charles "Bud" Tingwell, among others. As well as other stage roles, Chater appeared in the stage production of "The Importance of Being Earnest" as both "Lane" and "Merriman", joining the cast in 1990. The production was so popular that it was an ongoing stage production between 1988 and 1992, and was televised by the ABC.
