| Heathen is an album by David Bowie. It marked the return of producer Tony Visconti who co-produced with Bowie several of Bowie's classic albums. The last album he co-produced was Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) from 1980. Musically, Heathen is an interesting mix of nostalgia with the cutting edge. "Slip Away" is very similar in mood and style to classic Bowie songs like "Life on Mars?", while "Slow Burn" certainly is reminiscent of the songs ""Heroes"" and "Teenage Wildlife". On the other hand, "Sunday", "I Would Be Your Slave" and "Heathen (The Rays)" sound all very contemporary and fresh. It seems this mixture of old and new was a success as the album got both good reviews and sold quite well. The working title for the album was Toy, first mentioned in 2000. This album was meant to feature some new songs and remakes of some his lesser-known songs from the 60's. "Afraid" and "Slip Away" (then titled "Uncle Floyd") was two of the new songs intended for this album. Some of the remakes made it as B-side to the singles of Heathen. The song "Cactus" is a cover of a Pixies song on their album, Surfer Rosa. The album features guest appearances from Who guitarist Pete Townshend and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl. 'Heathen' has also been released on a SACD in a limited number of copies with slightly longer versions of five of the songs.
