Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison'' is a 1957 film which tells the story of a Marine (Robert Mitchum) shipwrecked in the Pacific Ocean; his landing on a desert island, and his emotional struggle between respect and love with the only other person there, a nun (Deborah Kerr.) The two are soon joined on the island by a company of Japanese soldiers who occupy an abandoned village and turn it into a major base of operations forcing Mitchum and Kerr to take shelter in a hidden cave. Assuming the role of protector, Mitchum secretly raids the Japanese camp for supplies, narrowly avoiding detection. His long absence frightens the nun who is just about to reveal her presence and surrender herself when he finally returns. Realizing an American landing is imminent, he takes it upon himself to render the Japanese artillery useless, but is discovered after being forced to kill a soldier. Mitchum escapes into the jungle, but In an effort to force him into the open, the Japanese set fire to the island foliage. Mitchum and Kerr are left with but two choices; die of smoke inhalation or die of a bullet.

The movie was adapted by John Huston and John Lee Mahin from the novel by Charles Shaw. It was directed by Huston.

It was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Deborah Kerr) and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium.
