MADtv (1995-2000): The Alfred E. Newman eraOverview: Birth of a LegendThe genesis of MADtv can be traced back to the Fox Broadcasting Company executives' desire to produce a show which could successfully rival Saturday Night Live. In 1990, FOX achieved their desired success with In Living Color, which was created and produced by Keenen Ivory Wayans. In Living Color lasted for four seasons with Wayans as Executive Producer and was a cult success. However, after the fourth season, Wayans left the show and most of the cast (including all of his siblings) left with him. Despite the fact that the new cast had stars like Carol Rosenthal from FOX's other (short-lived) sketch comedy show, The Edge, and Anne-Marie Johnson, Season 5 failed to obtain enough support from the viewers and the show was cancelled in 1994.At that point, the quest to find a replacement series began. In 1994, FOX executives gave John Leguizamo a chance to to fill the void which In Living Color left with his show, House of Buggin. However, many critics and viewers believed that House of Buggin lacked the edgeness and creativity of its predecessor. As a result, the show was not renewed at the end of the 1994-1995 season. The MAD! MAD! seasonsBefore the start of the third season (1997-1998), three of the original cast members, Bryan Callen, Orlando Jones, and Artie Lange left the show. Lange was removed from the cast due to drug and alcohol problems, while the others left the show for unknown reasons. A fourth original cast member, David Herman, would stay for the first half of the third season before leaving as well. However, new castmembers were added (Alex Borstein, Aries Spears, Will Sasso, Pat Kilbane, Lisa Kushell, and Chris Hogan). With the fourth season (1998-1999) came additional cast changes. Lisa Kushell and Chris Hogan left, but Michael McDonald (who is well-known for his character Stuart) and Mo Collins were welcomed to the cast. The End of an EraPat Kilbane and Phil LaMarr left by the sixth season (2000-2001), by which time Nelson Ascencio and Christian Duguay joined the cast.MADtv Sketches (1995 - 2000)Recurring charactersThe Alfred E. Furthermore, the theme song, which is performed by the hip-hop group Heavy D & the Boyz, begins. Each member of the cast is introduced alphabetically and silently with their name appearing in caption over black and white live action clips of each performer.
