MADtv (2005-2010): The Generation Next eraOverview: Full CircleAs MADtv entered its second decade, the evolution of the cast had come full circle. Promising stars from previous seasons, like Ron Pederson, Paul Vogt, and Spencer Kayden, were fired from the show at the start of season eleven. Moreover, season eleven was noted as the end of an era for some of the stalwarts of the MADtv cast, like Aries Spears, Michael McDonald and Stephnie Weir. Aries Spears, who had been a fixture on the show since MADtv's third season, announced in the spring of 2005 that he would leave the show at the end of MADtv's tenth season. Stephnie Weir also announced over the summer reccess, along with Paul Vogt and Ron Pederson, that she was going to leave as well. However, in order to provided a sense of continuity, FOX executives pursauded her to remain on the cast for part of season eleven before resigning from the cast. As for Michael McDonald, it had been announced in February that his and two other cast members' (Frank Caliendo and Bobby Lee) contracts had expired, which meant that only he and the other two cast members had an option to renew for futher seasons or just leave the show at the end of season eleven. As of March 2006, McDonald has not announced his return for season twelve. With the departures of cast members from season ten, a new group of cast members was formed, who sought to leave their unique mark on MADtv history. Joining MADtv during its eleventh season as a repertory player, was Groundlings alumnus and movie actress, Arden Myrin. Myrin's uncanny celebrity impersonations of Tara Reid, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, and EX-treme Dating host, Jillian Barberie continued the legacy set by MADtv's previous era of the Women Renaissance. The featured players included Chicago natvive and Second City alum, Frank Caeti and Groundlings alumnus and telvision star Nicole Randall Johnson. Caeti achieved instant fame on the show for his impressions of comedian Nick DiPaolo and former Miami Dolphins head coach Jimmy Johnson. Johnson also gained noteriety for her celebrity impressions of Star Jones and Chris Rock. As the eleventh season marks the beginning of the Generation Next era of MADtv, much of this era is still an open canvas. Assuming that MADtv will be renewed by FOX for future seasons, the direction and character of the show may change due to factors like ratings, writers, producers and new cast members who achieve stardom. Despite all of these factors, MADtv will continue to be remembered as a milestone in American late night television history and the new generation of MADtv cast members will continue the legacy.
