Actors - I'm Every Woman

"I'm Every Woman" is the second single released from Whitney Houston
's first feature film soundtrack, The Bodyguard
.

Song Information

The song was written by the hit making duo, Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson (responsible for several Top 40 hits, most notably the string of Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell songs from the late 1960s), and the song was originally recorded by fellow R&B songstress Chaka Khan. The song proved to be a hit for Khan, and is considered her signature song. Houston dusted off the classic disco anthem, and took a shot at recording it, hoping it to be a big hit for her as well as Khan.

Chart Information

Following the outrageously and record-breaking success of "I Will Always Love You", Houston hoped to ride off the wave of success the song enjoyed. In fact, the week the single was officially released, "I Will Always Love You" was at #1 for a 6th week (and would remain at #1 for 8 more weeks). The song entered the Hot 100 at a modest #66, so many expected it to flop. The following week, the song was at #66 again, but the following week, the song shot up to the Top 40 (a 66-32 jump) and continued steadily rising until it reached its peak position of #4. The song then steady declined until falling off the charts.

On other Billboard Charts, the song proved to be a moderate success, peaking at a considerably low #11 on the Hot 100 Single Sales (Houston's 2nd single to miss the Top 10 on the chart), but surprisingly became a #2 on the Hot 100 Airplay, where as Houston was largely more popular on the Singles Sales chart. However, the song did sell enough units to be certified Gold. The song also reached #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart and on the Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales. The song also reached #4 on the R&B Chart, but surprisingly flopped on the Adult Contemporary chart, only reaching a pitiful #26.

Internationally, the single was well received, but could not match the success of "I Will Always Love You", going top 10 in the UK and just outside the Top 10 in France, Australia, and Germany (with a #11, #11, and #13 peak respectively), and make a Top 20 impression (#18) in Switzerland.
