"I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" is the second single from Pop singer Britney Spears released from the album Britney
during the fourth quarter of 2001.

The song was written by Dido, Max Martin and Rami, and was also produced by the latter two. On the verge of womanhood, the song shows Britney informing the world that she is "not a girl" but also her realization that she is "not yet a woman" as she says "all I need is time, a moment that is mine." The song was featured in the film Crossroads, which stars Britney. It went on to win a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Original Song.

Music video

Directed by Wayne Isham, the music video for "Not a Girl" became yet another to retire on MTV's TRL. It won an award in Japan for Best International Music Video.

There are two versions of the video for this track. One is the album version which features Spears mostly atop and inside a large mountain in a canyon. The other is the movie version, which, because the single was meant to help promote Britney's film Crossroads, includes several scenes from the movie. Other scenes include Spears in a gown singing in one of the rooms where Crossroads is shot, and another where she is driving a car.

Chart performance

Though "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" was meant to help promote Crossroads, it flopped in the U.S., failing to chart on the Billboard Hot 100; it did, however, appear on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart at a peak of number two, which would be equivalent to number 102 if the Hot 100 ran past one-hundred ranks. At Top 40 radio, the single peaked at the bottom end of the Top 40 Tracks, Mainstream Top 40 and Adult Contemporary.

The song received a mixed response internationally; in some countries, such as the U.K. and Australia, it was hit, peaking at number two and number seven, respectively. However, in other regions like Canada and Brazil, it flopped heavily, failing to break into the top forty in either country.

"I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman" was a success in the U.K. just missing the top spot but selling only 125,000 copies (probably due to the decline in singles sales since the millenium).
