"I'm Your Baby Tonight" is the lead single and title track off Whitney Houston's 3rd studio album, "I'm Your Baby Tonight".

Song Information

"I'm Your Baby Tonight" was written by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and L.A. Reid (the new owner of Arista Records). After Houston had been criticized for having too much pop material, the team at Arista bounced back with this edgy, soft rock song, showing Houston could live up to pop stars such as Janet Jackson and Madonna. This song speaks about a woman who is willing and able to do anything her man wants her to.

Chart Information

Houston recently had placed 7 consecutive #1's on the Hot 100 two years ago. However, her previous two releases has both failed to capture the #1 spot. Houston was faced with pressure to return the lead single from her next album to #1 (seen by many as the determining factor in whether Houston's newest album would flop). Houston did not disappoint, as "I'm Your Baby Tonight" became Houston's long-awaited eighth number one hit, holding down the top spot for 1 week, from December 1 - December 7, 1990, and the song remained in the Top 40 for 14 weeks.

The song also hit #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 Airplay for one week, and sold enough copies to be certified Gold, Houston's first certified release since 1987's "So Emotional." The song also hit #1 on the R&B Chart for 2 weeks, her first single to hit #1 on the chart since 1986's "How Will I Know".

Internationally, the song was a success, hitting the Top 10 in several major countries (#4 France), (#4 Switzerland), (#5 UK), (#5 Germany), (#7 Australia). The song became Houston's first internationally successful single since 1987's "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)"

Remixes

The main remix to the song is LA Reid and Babyface's remix. The song begins as normal, but goes into a new verse featuring Babyface with background occasional rapping by LA Reid.

Music video

The music video features an edgier, rougher Houston (much different than she was in videos such as "How Will I Know" and "I Wanna Dance with Somebody") paying homage to the sounds of black music that have helped define her sound, paying tribute in simulation to the Harlem Renessaince (with Houston as Josephine Baker), Motown (most notably The Supremes as Houston uses cloning imagery to create 2 clones of herself), and Hollywood's Golden Age (with Houston dressed as Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face
), finally returning to present day by the video's end.
