The Creation

I Love Rock 'N Roll is one of the classic rock songs of all time. The song was originally recorded and released by The Arrows in 1975 on RAK Records, produced by Mickie Most. Written by two Arrows band members, lead singer Alan Merrill and guitarist Jake Hooker, the Arrows' version was first released as a b-side, but was soon flipped to a-side status on the second pressing of the record.

Evolution

The song was later discovered and covered by Joan Jett, first in 1979 with two of the Sex Pistols, Steve Jones and Paul Cook. The first version she released was not a hit. Jett recorded the song a second time, as Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, and it went to #1 in the Billboard Top 100 for seven weeks in 1982, and launched Jett's solo career. Joan Jett's 1982 recording of "I Love Rock 'n Roll" was the most played song on American radio since "I Want to Hold Your Hand" by The Beatles in the 1960s.
