In the Zone is the fourth studio album from American pop music singer Britney Spears, released on November 18, 2003.

In The Zone is the fourth studio album by Britney Spears. Her most sexual offering to date, In The Zone was also Britney's most musically diverse album, featuring producers such as R.Kelly, Bloodshy & Avant, and Moby and also, a huge artistic input by Britney herself compared to other albums.

The album's first single was "Me Against The Music", a duet with pop icon Madonna. Though the song became a monster hit on the dance charts, it had only minor success on the Top 40. With the release of the second single "Toxic", Britney scored her first major hit in four years, as it hit #9 on the Billboard Top 100 and was certified platinum. In fact, the song was so successful that it, for a while at least, quieted gossip involving her private life and even attracted those whom were not fans of Britney. Shortly after, "Everytime" was released as the albums third single. Fueled by a controversial video directed by David LaChapelle, the song became a Top 20 hit and was ultimately certified gold. Though a fourth single, "Outrageous", was released (in certain areas of the U.S.), a video was never finished as Britney reportedly damaged her knee while shooting the clip. As a result, the song did not fare well on the charts. But, the song performed better than most songs do without a music video. Also, it did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay or Hot 100 Single Sales.

The reported damage to her knee also forced the cancellation of her "Onyx Hotel" tour, which featured risque imagery and caused criticism from parents whose children were fans of Britney Spears. The tour also drew scorn from music enthusiasts due to the fact that she lip synched the majority of the show and only sung "Everytime" live.

The album debuted at #1 (with sales of over 609,000 copies ) and to date has sold just under 3 million copies in the US(2.9 million according to Nielsen Soundscan). It was her lowest selling album to date in the U.S.. Despite the fact it was her least commercial successful album of original material, "In the Zone" had more success with singles in the US than its predecessor. Though album sales continue to spiral downward, it did cause Britney to leave the realm of teen pop. Furthermore, some regard In The Zone as Britney's best work to date.

After the release of the album the critics ignored "Toxic" and focused their attention on "Breathe On Me" and "Touch Of My Hand", both have sexual content, sex and masturabtion. If one thinks of many of Britney's songs which were released and the amount of media attention they caused (e.g. "I'm A Slave 4 U", "Everytime" etc...) both the songs, "Breathe On Me" and "Touch of my Hand" would of been huge successes, not only due to the controversy that would be caused but the two songs are actually two of the best of the album.
