Jack Thompson AM (born August 31 1940) is an Australian actor. His name at birth was John Hadley Payne, but this was changed when he was adopted.

Thompson was born in Manly, a suburb of Sydney. Jack Thompson is one of the major figures of Australian cinema. He starred in the laconic Australian classic Sunday Too Far Away
. He is also known for the movie 'Breaker' Morant
, in which he played a very fine supporting role as court martial defence attorney Major Thomas, winning two awards for acting, at Cannes and AFI. He also appeared in the movie The Man From Snowy River
, in which he played the role of Clancy, and also appeared in the 1970s television show Spyforce. He was the recipient of the Living Legend Awards at the 2005 Inside Film Awards.

Thompson recently appeared in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones as Cliegg Lars and with Sean Penn in The Assassination of Richard Nixon as Jack Jones, the successful salesman.

Other credits are Girl From Peking, Wake In Fright, The Boys, The Journalist, Libido, Petersen, Scobie Malone, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and Mad Dog Morgan.

Thompson was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia on 9 June 1986 for his service to the Australian film industry, and served as an UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador.

For many years Jack was part of a ménage à trois with current wife Leona King and her sister Bunkie. His statement about the arrangement is as follows - "I wouldn't have missed it for quids."

Movie reviewer Peter Thompson is his brother.
