| James H. Pierce, of Shelbyville, IN, became one of the first actors to portray Tarzan on film. After starring on the Indiana University football team, Pierce went to the West Coast to pursue an acting career. Pierce's life changed when he attended a party given by Edgar Rice Burroughs and his daughter Joan. Burroughs, the creator and author of the Tarzan books, immediately wanted Pierce for his next Tarzan movie. The silent film, released in 1927, was titled Tarzan and the Golden Lion. Joan Burroughs and James Pierce eventually married. From 1932 to 1934, James and Joan Pierce were the voices of Tarzan and Jane on national radio. Both are buried in Shelbyville, IN, and their tombstones bear the inscription Tarzan and Jane.
