| John Simm (born July 10 1970 in Leeds, Yorkshire) is an English actor. He grew up in Nelson, Lancashire. He has appeared in a number of British TV shows such as Cracker and in the unsuccessful film Boston Kickout before appearing in the television series The Lakes and in the popular film Human Traffic. In 2003 Simm also starred in the acclaimed Paul Abbott serial State of Play. His most famous part has been playing Bernard Sumner from Joy Division and New Order fame in the 2002 film 24 Hour Party People, starring alongside Ralf Little and Steve Coogan. In 2006 he is appearing as Detective Inspector Sam Tyler in the popular new BBC series "Life on Mars" in which he plays a police officer apparently sent back in time to 1973.
