Actors - Joseph Marcell

Joseph Marcell (born August 18, 1947 in St. Lucia) is an actor. He is best known for his work as Geoffrey the snooty English butler in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He has a son born in 1979 and a daughter born in 1989. He has been performing a whole range of projects, both in Los Angeles and England, since the series went off the air on NBC (it still continues in daily syndication all over the world).

Marcell has starred in the poignant film drama, We Three, shot in the beautiful Welsh countryside, a rousing BBC TV comedy sitcom and Brothers & Sisters, now in its second season, as the Pastor of a highly charged congregation. He also returned to his Shakespearean roots, starring in the BBC Radio productions of MacBeth and Othello. These combined with guest roles in the American hit series, Living Single, In the House, The Bold and the Beautiful and featured roles in British productions of the mini-series Mr Libel and Renford Rejects have kept him too busy to miss even all the good times of working with his Fresh Prince colleagues, Will Smith
, James Avery
, Alfonso Ribeiro
, Karyn Parsons
and Tatyana Ali
.

His family, who had emigrated from Saint Lucia in the Caribbean to London, expected Joseph to become an electrical engineer. After Joseph rebelled at age 19, his father insisted that his son support himself and his acting dreams.

For the production, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, executives at NBC developed the role of Geoffrey specifically for Joseph. The hit series was a comedy sensation for six seasons (1990-1996), and brought the acclaimed Shakespearean actor to national attention. In somewhat of a thinly disguised homage to his character on Fresh Prince, Marcell again played a butler on The Bold and the Beautiful in 2003-04.

Marcell continues to be active on both sides of the Atlantic, with the Arts Council of Great Britain, The London Roundhouse Arts Project and as an Artistic Directorate of the Shakespeare Globe Theatre. He serves on the board of the Globe Theatre in London and is a British citizen.

He also appeared in the 1988 Doctor Who serial Remembrance of the Daleks.
