| Leon Ames (born January 20, 1902 in Portland, Indiana; died October 12, 1993 in Los Angeles, California), born Leon Waycoff to a Russian family, was an American film and television actor. He is most widely remembered for playing a number of fatherly figures in such titles as Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), Little Women (1949), and the 1950s sitcom Life with Father, but also appeared in notable roles in Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932), The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946) and Peyton Place (1957). Other television roles included Father of the Bride and Mr. Ed. His last role was as Kathleen Turner's grandfather in the film Peggy Sue Got Married (1986). He served as president of the Screen Actors Guild, of which he was one of the founding members, from 1957 to 1958. Ames died of a stroke in 1993.
