| Dame Marie Tempest DBE (15 July 1864–15 October 1942), born Mary Susan Etherington, was an English singer and actress known as the "queen of her profession". She was also on occasions, her own manager. She was born in London and studied music in Paris and at the Royal Academy of Music in London, as a singing pupil (soprano) of Manuel Garcia. She was created a Dame Commander of the British Empire (DBE) in 1937. She died aged 78 in London.
