Actor Michael Schoeffling (born 1960 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and raised in New Jersey) began his career in the mid-1980s as a GQ fashion model, photographed by the likes of Bruce Weber. He went on to star in movies such as Sixteen Candles
and Vision Quest
. Michael studied at the Lee Strasberg Institute and Temple University.

Schoeffling is married to a fellow former model, Valerie Robinson, with two teenaged children and has mostly dropped out of acting. He now runs his own business, a shop in his northeastern Pennsylvania hometown of Wilkes-Barre, near Scranton and north of the Poconos Mountains, that produces handcrafted furniture.

While in high school and college, Schoeffling was an accomplished amateur wrestler medalling in national and international tournaments, winning a Gold Medal in the Junior Olympics held in Germany. His wrestling skill is shown as Kuch in Vision Quest where he wrestles Matthew Modine, his best friend in the movie.

Schoeffling's character in Sixteen Candles
, Jake Ryan, is legendary among fans of all ages. The Washington Post ran an article titled, "Real Men Can't Hold a Match to Jake Ryan of Sixteen Candles" on Valentine's Day, 2004. Jennifer Love Hewitt declared to Rolling Stone magazine in 2002 that "My whole life, I've been waiting for Jake Ryan . . . to come and get me."
