Milva, real name Maria Ilva Biolcati (born July 17 1939, Goro, province of Ferrara) is a famous Italian singer, actress and Tv personality. She is also known as the the Red (as the coulour of her hairs) or as the Goro Panther, from a journalist naming the 3 most talented Italian female singers of the 1970s with the birth place plus an animal name; the two more are Mina as the Cremona Tiger and Iva Zanicchi as the Ligonchio Eagle.BiographyIn 1959 Milva wins a contest for new voices, being the absolute top awarded over more than 7 thousand participants. In 1960 she records her first 7" with the Cetra records: Edith Piaf's song Milord. Her real debut is on the stage of Sanremo Music Festival in 1961 where she achieves the third place. Several times after she will compete again at the Festival (14 times in total, last one in 1993), the highest position is a second place in 1962 but she never won so far.In 1965 there is a fotunate meeting which is going to change definitely her career as simple pop singer: she meets the Italo-German actor, dramatist and director Giorgo Strehler. With his direction she starts to develop her skills in staging and singing in Italian theatres (especially the Piccolo Teatro in Milan) and she begins to performe a more committed repertoire (songs of Italian resistance movement, songs from Bertold Brecht's pieces, etc.). In the following years she alternates success in singing (especially in Germany where she wins platinum and gold records for the top result of records selling) and in theatre performing (a remarkable edition of The Threepenny Opera is staged in 1973 represented all over Europe with a huge success). In 1962 she is the first singer to attempt successfully to sing Edith Piaf's repertoire in prestigious stage of Olympia theatre in Paris. In 1983 she performs again and she achieves once more a real ovation by the public and the French press, very surprised how a non-French artist could interpret with such a feeling and new energy the songs of the most beloved French singer. In her career she develops as a highly eclectic artist, from pop music to Opera (with Luciano Berio), from comedy theatre to committed theatre (she is the first non-German actress to achieve a huge success in Bertold Brecht staging, somehow also putting in a shadow the former actresses of the same roles), TV shows (Al Paradise in 1981 wins the Rose d'Or in Montreaux Festival) and musicals. She also occasionally plays in some Italian movies of the 1960s, like The beautiful Ippolita with Gina Lollobrigida. Her singing career gets year by year more complexity and various, thanks to the collaboration with some of the most talented composers and musician in European scene: Ennio Morricone in 1965, Francis Lai in 1973, Mikis Theodorakis in 1978 (Was ich denke best selling album in Germany), Enzo Jannacci in 1980, Vangelis in 1981 and 1986, Franco Battiato in 1982 and 1986. Staging career goes from success to success, touring the world's most prestigious theatres with Bertold Brecht's recitals and Luciano Berio's operas. She performs in La Scala in Milan, in the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, in Paris Opera, in Royal Albert Hall in London, at Los Angeles Olympic Games, at Edinburgh Festival and many others. In 1984 she performs with Astor Piazzolla the show El tango in the Les Bouffes du Nort Theatre in Paris. This is just the beginning of a new important collaboration, interpreting the Tangos of revolutionary Piazzolla all over the world and becoming her favourite singer. In the 1990s her master Giorgio Strehler dies. She temporarily reduce her staging activity focusing in music only. She gets new inspiration collaborating with Thanos Mikroutsikos, James Last or Shinji Tanimura. She performs her tour number 14 in Japan. In 2004 her last cd and tour is dedicated to set to music of the poetry of Milan poetress Alda Merini. She has a daughter named Martina, born after the marriage with Maurizio Corgnati in the early 1960s. A complete artistMilva is definitely the only Italian singer who was able to entirely express her talents in music, theatre and comedy. She is a particularly ecleptic and versatile show-woman, sometimes histrionic, but her career can't be reduced to a singing career only, even if highly talented and best know among her audience for her records only.Sometimes her no-stop research for new original inspiration in different fields out of traditional standards, reduced somehow the results from the point of view of record-selling in Italy. But her production has never been a market niche. She was able instead to sometimes spread to the public of pop music the musical works of more complex and committed authors (such as with the long playing Milva sings Brecht in 1971). Nevertheless her name for the big audience is indiscernably attached to complete mastery of the stage, to the variery and to the refinement of the music interpretation. In the last year she is definitely more famous and valued abroad rather than in Italy, especially in Germany, where she did her last tour in 2005, the last one of her career with many close by dates in different cities. Her discography is spread through Italy and Germany mostly, but also in France, Japan, Spain, South America, Greece, Korea, etc. [ Visit the complete Wikipedia entry for Milva ] Some related entries: Stephen Merchant | Daniela Luján | Tom Sturridge | John Cusack | Kyla Pratt | Jack Duffy | Marika Rivera | Phil Regan | Kazia Pelka | Madame Fatal | Alex Outhred This page is based on the copyrighted Wikipedia article Milva; it is used under the GNU Free Documentation License.
