Mindy Kaling (born 1979) is an Indian-American actress and scriptwriter who is most known for playing Kelly Kapoor in The Office.

She graduated from Buckingham, Browne & Nichols, a private school in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1997 and was classmates with Alison Folland. Afterwards, she attended Dartmouth College and graduated in 2001.

In Spring 2003, she entered her absurdist original short play Matt and Ben in the New York International Fringe Festival, featuring herself as Ben Affleck. It was in this play where producer Greg Daniels took notice of her and, along with B.J. Novak and Paul Lieberstein, she was hired to write and have a feature role on the American version of The Office.

Daniels originally wasn't sure where to use her on screen until the point came during production of the episode "Diversity Day" when Michael needed to be slapped by a minority. "Since then, I've been on the show," Kaling stated in an 2006 interview.

So far, she has written four episodes of the series: "Hot Girl", "The Dundies", "The Injury" and "Take Your Daughter To Work Day".

Mindy landed her first onscreen film role as Amy in The 40-Year-Old Virgin
in 2005.

In the fall of 2005, she was offered a writing job on Saturday Night Live
, but turned it down as she was already working on The Office. However, she will be guest-writing for the show in April 2006.
