The Mukherjee-Samarth family has been involved in the Indian Bollywood
film industry since the 1940s. The Mukherjee family was connected to the Samarth family by Tanuja
's marriage to Shomu Mukherjee in 1973.

The Mukherjees

Some accounts say that the Mukherjee film clan was headed by Sashadhar Mukherjee, described as the founder of Filmalaya studios. His three sons, Joy Mukherjee, Deb Mukherjee
, and Shomu Mukherjee followed him into the industry. Joy and Deb were actors; Shomu became a director and producer.

Sashadhar apparently had a brother, who's son Ram Mukherjee, is the father of the contemporary star actress Rani Mukerji
. Many biographies of Rani state that her father Ram was the founder and owner of Filmalaya. It is not clear which of these accounts is correct.

Sashadhar Mukherjee was married to Ashok Kumar’s sister.

Filmalaya Studios is currently owned by Shomu Mukherjee (Kajol's father), Ram Mukherjee (Rani's father) and Romu Mukherjee (Sharbani's father).

Rani Mukerji

Rani Mukherjee, now known as Rani Mukerji, is a second cousin to Kajol. According to biographies Rani's mother was a playback singer . She is a popular actress and has won critical acclaim for her performances in films such as Saathiya
, Yuva
, Hum Tum
and Black
. She appeared with her cousin Kajol
in the 1998 hit Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
.

Her brother Raja Mukherjee is a producer but is now working on his first directorial project.

An interview with Simi Garewal confirmed that Kajol's and Rani's grandfathers were brothers, so the two actresses are in fact second cousins.

Sharbani Mukherjee

Aspiring actress Sharbani Mukherjee
is said to be the daughter of Romu Mukherjee who is the eldest son of Sasadhar Mukherjee & Kajol and Tanisha's uncle.

The Samarths

The Samarth film clan was started by Rattan Bai
, a Bollywood star of the 1940s. Her daughter Shobhna Samarth
(1915-9 February 2000), was also an actress and starred in films such as Love in Simla (1960) (which also featured Joy Mukherjee).

Shobna's daughters Tanuja
and Nutan
carried on the family tradition. Tanuja was a moderate success, but it was Nutan (June 4, 1936 - February, 1991) who became a huge star. She holds the record for the most Filmfare awards won for Best Actress.

Tanuja and Nutan's children have also entered the film industry; they are the fourth generation of Samarths to do so. Nutan's son Mohnish Behl
is an actor; Tanuja's daughters Kajol
and Tanisha
are actresses.

actress. She has won three Filmfare awards for Best Actress. Her films with Shahrukh Khan
have been huge hits.

Kajol is married to actor Ajay Devgan
; the couple has a daughter. Marriage and motherhood sidelined Kajol for a number of years, but she is now planning a comeback. She is signed to do a film with start Aamir Khan -- the working title for the film is Fanaah.
