"My Prerogative" is a 1988 single by R&B singer Bobby Brown (see 1988 in music). The second single from Brown's second solo album Don't Be Cruel, "My Prerogative" was a number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, and is among Brown's most successful recordings. The song was covered in 2004 by Pop singer Britney Spears for her Greatest Hits: My Prerogative compilation, and released the song as a single during the third quarter of 2004.Overview"My Prerogative" was written by Brown with new jack swing pioneer Teddy Riley and Gene Griffin, the song's producer. The song's lyrics reflected Brown's bad-boy image, and were representative of the new jack swing sound popular in the late-1980s. Following the top ten success of "Don't Be Cruel," "My Prerogative" earned Gold sales, and became Brown's first and only number one single on the U.S Billboard Hot 100. The track was also a number one hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks, and reached the top ten of the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart.Spears' cover was not as successful in the US (it failed to break into the Billboard Hot 100), though it did peak at number one on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart (equivalent to a position of number 101 on the Hot 100 if it extended beyond one-hundred songs). However, her version did peak at number two on the Hot Digital Tracks, and was a top ten hit in several other countries. Directed by Jake Nava, the music video for Spears' version of "My Prerogative," depicting a wedding reception party for Spears and her real-life husband Kevin Federline, was well-received. It was later chosen by Rolling Stone magazine as the best video of 2004. Consequently, Muchmusic's Fromage chose it as the worst video of 2004. Spears' cover was much more succesful than Brown's in the U.K. selling a total of 180,000 copies, because the single was released at the end of 2004 it only had half the sales to guide it in the year end charts so it would have probably become a top 30 best seller of the year. Christina Aguilera also released her single "Car Wash" at the same time as Spears' Prerogative... Britney ended up with the highest chart position.
