| "Overprotected" and "Overprotected (The Darkchild Remix)" are the third singles from Pop singer Britney Spears released from the album Britney. It is the second single in the fourth quarter of 2001 internationally, and third single released during the first quarter of 2002 in the U.S. The song is another product of the pop songwriting and producing team made up of Max Martin and Rami, though the "Darkchild Remix" version of the song was produced by Rodney Jerkins. The single was released in its original state internationally, but as the "Darkchild Remix" in the U.S. Thus, there were two different music videos released to promote the song. Britney declares in the song that she is "overprotected" and explains to the world that she cannot find out who she is, where she needs to go and what she needs to do if she is restricted from certain experiences. In 2003, Spears was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the song. Music videosOriginal music videoFor the release of the original version of the song internationally, Spears reunited with director Billie Woodruff ("Born to Make You Happy").The video begins with Britney driving away from the intrusive media. She makes her way into an alleyway, and decides to enter an abandoned factory, hoping her pursuers will be thrown off course. As soon as she walks inside, she begins to dance on random pieces of furniture. Next, some people who spotted her walking into the factory follow inside and begin to dance along with Spears. Towards the end of the video, we see segments of Britney in a room with walls covered in pictures and articles about herself. These walls begin to close in on her before the video ends, signifying that she is "overprotected." Remix music videoFor the release of the "Darkchild Remix" version of the song in the U.S., the video was directed by Chris Applebaum. It starts out with Britney watching the news in a hotel, when a negative story about her comes up. She next receives a call from her friends, apparently with an invitation to go out with them. Spears meets them in an elevator, where they fool around briefly with the security cameras. A dance scene in the main lobby of the building proceeds. After this, Spears makes her way into her limo. The interior transforms itself into a sort of dance hall, and Britney and her friends begin to grind. Making their way to a destination in an alleyway, it begins to rain down on Spears and her friends. Now wet, the group dances suggestively, with Spears in the front feeling herself up. At the end of the video, we discover that Spears and her friends dancing suggestively in the rain was the news story being reported on the TV, revealing that the video had actually all been a flashback to what had happened earlier that day. The video faced minor controversy as it is extremely similar in its setting and lighting to the music video of Janet Jackson's "Son of a Gun (I Betcha Think This Song Is About You)." Still, it was as popular as any of Britney's previous efforts, and the video retired itself on MTV's TRL. Chart performanceDespite its remixed state, "Overprotected (The Darkchild Remix)" became another single on the steadily-increasing list of Spears' non-successful singles in the U.S., reaching a peak of only number eighty-six on the Billboard Hot 100. Though the track failed to chart on the Hot 100 Airplay, it strangely still had enough points to chart on the Hot 100 as it was released as 'airplay-only'. This is a somewhat notable feat, and would be repeated in much the same with "Outrageous" in 2004.The story was the same at Top 40 radio, as the song failed to chart on either the Top 40 Tracks or Rhythmic Top 40, though it did make it into the lower reaches of the Mainstream Top 40. At this point in Spears' career, "Overprotected" was probably only second to "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know" in terms of least international success. Though it was hardly a flop, it missed the top ten in most countries. "Overprotected" was received well in the U.K. debuting at five and moving up to four in it's second week. The single sold 124,000 copies. 1 Darkchild Remix Category:2001 singles Category:2001 songs Category:2002 singles Category:Britney Spears songs [ Visit the complete Wikipedia entry for Overprotected ] Some related entries: Richard Dreyfuss | Louise Delamere | I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday | Rachel Gurney | Zsanett Égerházi | Tony Roberts | Joy Bisco | Bridget Neval | Tatiana Vilhelmová | Edward Shuter | Cool Hand Luke This page is based on the copyrighted Wikipedia article Overprotected; it is used under the GNU Free Documentation License.
