Owen Cunningham Wilson (born November 18, 1968) is an American actor.

Biography

Early life

Wilson was born in Dallas, Texas to Robert Andrew Wilson and Laura Cunningham, both of whom were of Irish Catholic descent. He attended the St. Mark's School of Texas before graduating from high school at the New Mexico Military Institute. He was expelled from St. Mark's in grade 11. Afterwards, he attended the University of Texas at Austin. This is where he met future collaborator Wes Anderson. Since his family was non-religious, he was not baptized at birth, but later in life was received into the Roman Catholic Church via RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation in Adults) and is a practicing Catholic. Wilson's younger brother, Luke Wilson, is also a well-known actor.

Nose

His trademark crooked nose was caused by having his nose broken once in high school and again in college during a flag football game at the University of Texas.

Rise to Stardom

In 1993, Wilson co-wrote and starred in the short film version of Bottle Rocket, which was directed by Wes Anderson. After being screened at the Sundance Film Festival, Wilson and Anderson were recruited by filmmaker James L. Brooks to expand the Bottle Rocket short to feature-length for Gracie Films. Although not a financial success upon its release in 1996, the film became a cult favourite and introduced Wilson's offbeat acting style to American audiences.

Career

He was featured in the Girl Skateboard Company movie "Yeah Right!" in 2003 (A common misconception about this movie has people believing Wilson is a professional skateboarder, after a comedic bit between Wilson and professional skateboarder Rick Howard leads to Rick Howard "challenging" Wilson to perform a number of impressive maneuvers. As the camera pans away from Wilson to Rick Howard's face, Eric Koston is seen in the background. When the camera pans back, it is in fact Eric Koston who has his back turned to the camera, wearing clothes similar to Owen Wilson, and Eric Koston does the tricks on the rail). His mild voice and oddball character make him perfect for his many petty crook roles. Wilson has co-written three films with director Wes Anderson—Bottle Rocket

, and The Royal Tenenbaums
, and was nominated for an Academy Award in 2001 for Best Original Screenplay for his work with Anderson on The Royal Tenenbaums.
