| Paul Xavier Gleason (born May 4, 1944) is an American actor. He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, and attended Catholic schools. Before becoming a television and movie star, Gleason played football and graduated from Florida State University in 1966. He was signed to a minor league baseball contract by the Cleveland Indians, but never made it into the big leagues. Gleason has been a star in many movies, and became well-known initially as Dr. David Thornton on All My Children, playing that particular role from 1976 to 1978. Gleason is perhaps best remembered for his role as the gruff disciplinary principal named Richard Vernon in the 1985 movie The Breakfast Club. As a matter of a fact, he has reprised that character several times, including in an A*Teens music video, at the television show Boy Meets World (although his principal's character had another name in BMW) and in the Not Another Teen Movie film. He played the equally abrasive Clarence "Mr." Beeks in the 1983 comedy film Trading Places starring Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd. Gleason is known to Star Wars fans for his role as Jeremitt Towani in the 1985 made-for-TV film The Battle for Endor. Paul Gleason also had a starring role in Die Hard and a list of other, lesser known movies and television shows. Gleason, in addition to his acting career, does many celebrity golf events a year, and he is known by autograph hunting experts to enjoy mingling with fans and signing autographs during these golf tournaments. He is currently married to his second wife; his first wife having been Canadian-born actress Joanna Gleason from whom he is divorced.
