, who also acts in it, along with Janet Leigh
and Peggy Lee
, who plays an alcoholic jazz singer. It was based on a radio series, also starring Webb. The film features a memorable cameo from Ella Fitzgerald as singer Maggie Jackson, a character who in the original radio series, was played by a white actress.

The story is set in Kansas City in 1927.

The film inspired a television series in 1959.
