Actors - Philip Quast


Philip Quast is an Australian actor perhaps best known for his role as Inspector Javert in the 10th Anniversary production of Les Misérables at the Royal Albert Hall, London. He is widely regarded as being the most popular and impressive Javert, and many fans compare any new actors in the role to his now somewhat legendary performances.

Musical Theatre

Philip played the part of Javert in England and Australia as well as in the Tenth Anniversary Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, the Les Misérables Complete Symphonic Recording, and in Hey, Mr. Producer, a concert on honor of Sir Cameron Mackintosh. In addition to Javert, Philip has played many other characters. He has thrice won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical:
  • 1991: for Stephen Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George in the lead role of George
  • 1998: for the Dempsey and Rowe musical The Fix in the role of Grahame Chandler
  • 2002: for Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific
    in the role of Emille de Beque
Philip has also costarred in the musical version of The Secret Garden opposite another famous Australian actor: Anthony Warlow
. Though mainly a dramatic baritone, Philip has also played a few tenor roles, namely George (as mentioned above), Candide in Candide, and Archibald Craven in The Secret Garden.

It has been announced on Tuesday, 31st January 2006 that Philip Quast has been cast as Juan Peron in the Andrew Lloyd Webber's 2006 production of Evita, that will be staged at the Adelphi Theatre in London.
