"Piano Man" was Billy Joel's first major hit. It first appeared on the album of the same name, released in 1973. It was praised by the public and critics alike.

It was also released on several greatest hits collections, including Essential Billy Joel.

This song was parodied by "Weird Al" Yankovic on his 2003 album Poodle Hat
("Ode To A Superhero").

Overview

"Piano Man" is considered by many to be a classic piano pop song. It begins with a memorable jazzy piano pop melody, followed by a harmonica riff. The lyrics of this song, consisting of the stories of various people in a bar, are very popular and led to Joel being referred to as "The Piano Man".

When originally issued as a single, the song was deemed too long by record executives, so two verses were cut in half and spliced together for the release as a 45. Later, Billy Joel's song The Entertainer mentions this event, commenting, "It was a beautiful song / But it ran too long ... / So they cut it down to 3:05."
