| Rajesh Khanna (Born Jatin Khanna on December 29, 1942 in Amritsar) is an Indian Bollywood actor, now active in politics. Khanna started his acting career in 1966, but struck success only in 1969, when he starred in two blockbusters, Do Raaste and Aradhana. Other hits include Namak Haram, Daag, Aan Milo Sajna, Aap ki Kasam and Mehbooba. Khanna was a screen star in the 1970's. He acted in movies such as Bawarchi, Anand (co-star was Amitabh Bachchan), Aavishkar and Saccha Jhoota. He won the Filmfare Best Actor Award, for the last three. Having enjoyed unprecendented mass appeal in the 70's, he is generally regarded as the first superstar of the Mumbai film industry. Khanna enjoyed an image of a "Romantic" hero during his peak period. His pairing with Mumtaz and Sharmila Tagore resulted in many hits. Good musical scores in his movies also had no insignificant part to play in his fame and popularity. Music directors like Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Rahul Dev Burman created memorable tunes which have been immortalized in the voice of Kishore Kumar, who was the playback singer for many songs in the movies of Rajesh Khanna. Rajesh Khanna was also reported to be quite popular with ladies in the Film Industry and had a string of affairs (including with Anju Mahendru and Tina Munim, both actresses). Khanna, as a superstar, was gradually and irreversibly replaced by Amitabh Bachchan, who became famous with his "Angry Young Man" image (film Zanjeer was notable for his success) owing to the various roles he performed for movies which made him the next superstar. Rajesh Khanna married Dimple Kapadia, also an actress in Bollywood (though they separated later) and they are the parents of Twinkle Khanna and Rinke Khanna, both Bollywood actresses. He was a Member of Parliament from New Delhi constituency. In 2005, for his acting, Rajesh Khanna won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
