Richard III is a 1955 British movie, directed by and starring Laurence Olivier. It is a film adaptation of William Shakespeare's play Richard III, also containing elements of Shakespeare's Henry VI, part 3.

Plot Summary

Edward IV (Cedric Hardwicke) has been placed on the throne due to the actions of his brother, Richard (Laurence Olivier). Richard wants the crown for himself, so he plots to have other brother (John Gielgud) murdered. Eventually Edward dies, and his sons, the young princes inherit the throne. Richard has them killed too, until eventually, he has the throne. But he does not stay in power for long, as Henry Tudor engages him on the field of Bosworth, where Richard is killed, and Henry inherits the throne.

As detailed in Johnny Rotten's autobiography, Rotten: No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs, Olivier's memorable theatrical performance as the frankly villainous, hunchbacked King would have large influence on him.

Scenes from this movie were used in the Sex Pistols' documentary The Filth And The Fury.
