| Sammi Cheng (鄭秀文) (pinyin: Zheng Xiuwen, born August 19, 1972, Place of Origin: Chaozhou, Guangdong) is a Hong Kong actress and Cantopop singer. Although primarily a singer, Cheng has had a successful film career, especially in the field of romantic comedy. Her goofy, sometimes scatterbrain image went well with the Hong Kong public. In 2000 she made a series of romantic comedies with Andy Lau and director Johnnie To, including Needing You (2000) and Love on a Diet (2001), which were hits and incorporate some elements of the screwball comedy. The BeginningSammi entered the entertainment industry through an annual singing contest in 1988, when she was only 16. She came in 3rd place and the sponsoring record company, "Capital Artist", offered her a contract. At that time, Sammi juggled between school and her singing career. The TransformationIn 1993, Sammi realized that in order to reach the next level of stardom, she must create an unique image for herself. At that time, another rising female artist, Faye Wong, started the wild/crazy fashion trend in the music industry. Capitalizing on the attention she's be getting from her duet with Andy Hui, "其實你心裡有沒有我" (Do you really have me in your heart?), Sammi lost the babyfat and went through a complete 180 degree transformation. She dyed her hair to orange and purposely 'westernize' her Chinese pronounciation. At that time, hair dying was only for gangsters and it was a 'taboo' for artists to look rebellious. Sammi also came out with her 4th album, "鄭秀文的快樂迷宮" (Sammi's Happy Maze), which included the hit single, "Chotto 等等" (Chotto Matte). The new image worked perfectly with the new single, which is a fast song, and it helped Sammi boost her singing career to the next level.Rise To SuperstardomFilmography, as actress
