In February 2004, it was announced Burmeister, along with Goodrem, had won the main role in the Australian comedy film Hating Alison Ashley, the movie based on the novel by Robin Klein, a prominent Australian author.

The film subsequently performed poorly at the box office in comparison to movies that were screening at the time. It earned less than $2 million despite being based on a successful book and screening in 180 Australian cinemas during the Easter holidays. While Hating Alison Ashley was seen by 60,000 people in its first weekend, takings dropped 28 per cent the following week, suggesting that word of mouth was rather negative.
