| Skipper Roberts is a Barbie doll, the energetic sister of Barbie Millicent Roberts. She was created by Mattel Toys in 1964, and so she is the second child of George and Margaret Roberts of Willows, Wisconsin. Since her introduction in 1964, Skipper has changed immensely. She started out as a little flat-chested girl, appearing to be about 10 or 11 years of age. At this time her friends included Skooter and Ricky (introduced in 1965), Fluff (1971) and Tiff (1972). In 1975 Growing Up Skipper was released. The gimmick of the doll (which also led to some controversy) was that you rotated her arm and she would grow an inch taller and develop small breasts. Growing Up Ginger was her friend for 1976. In 1979 Skipper's entire appearance changed. She was advertised as "Super Teen Skipper". She had small breasts and a different head mold that made her look slightly older. A year later, her boyfriend, named Scott, was introduced as well. Skipper changed again in 1988 with the release of Teen Fun Skipper. She grew taller and more graceful. Her waist was more flexible and her breasts had grown slightly again. Her eyes were very big and blue. At this stage she appeared to be somewhere between 12 and 15 years old. Her friend Courtney was first sold in 1989. Her second boyfriend was Kevin, created in 1991. Finally, in 1997, Teen Skipper was introduced. Skipper appeared to have had a growth spurt, because she was now almost as tall as her sister Barbie. This was mostly because of her legs, which had grown to be very long and lanky. Most notable, however, was Skipper's new face. She no longer looked like an innocent child, but more like a girl on the brink of becoming a woman. Known friends at this stage are Nikki and Courtney. The last year for Skipper dolls was in 2003. In the Random House novels of the 1960s, Skipper attended Baker Elementary, while the Marvel Comics of the early 1990s had her at Central Junior High School. Skipper dolls sold between 1964 and 1968 came in swimsuits with nautical stripes to match her name. Like her sister Barbie, she's had numerous "acquaintances," celebrity friends, fantasy friends and Disney friends. Some of these other dolls include Chocho, sold only in Japan in 1974 (made with the Quick Curl Skipper body); Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, introduced in 2000 (made with the Teen Fun Skipper body); the Peppermint Rose dolls from 1993 (made with the Teen Fun body); and numerous versions of Ariel, the Little Mermaid (sold in either the Teen Fun or Teen versions).
