"So Emotional" is a song by American singer Whitney Houston. The song was her third single from her sophomore album Whitney, and was released in November 1987.

"So Emotional" was written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, hitmakers known for Madonna's "Like A Virgin". Originally, the track was intended to have a Prince-like sound. However, upon hearing Narada Michael Walden's version of song, they felt he took the power and 'bite' of the song. The song centers on Houston loving being in love, saying I get so emotional/everytime I think of you/I get so emotional/Ain't it shocking what love can do

Chart information

At this time Houston had had a string of five consecutive number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Pressure was on Houston to deliver another number one with "So Emotional", so that she could tie for the record of most consecutive number ones (held by The Bee Gees and The Beatles at the time).

The song lived up to expectations, as "So Emotional" reached number one on the Billboard Charts from January 9 to January 15 1988, the first new number-one of 1988. "So Emotional" reached number two on the Hot 100 Airplay and number one on the Billboard Hot 100 Single Sales for two weeks, eventually receiving gold certification. The single remained in the Top 40 for fourteen weeks, and reached number one on Billboard's "Hot Club/Dance Play Chart".

Internationally, the single returned Houston to the top ten in the United Kingdom, peaking at number five, but did badly elsewhere, reaching only twenty-one in France, twenty-six in Australia, twenty-seven in Germany, and thirty in Switzerland.

Music video

The video for "So Emotional" is straightforward, with Houston singing about her experience with love, and how love can do crazy things to people. Parts of it were filmed at a Houston concert at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

"So Emotional" was ranked sixth on The Billboard Hot 100 year-end charts (1988), and remained in The Billboard Hot 100 for eighteen weeks.

"So Emotional" was Houston's sixth number-one single on The Billboard Hot 100, her fifth on The Billboard Hot 100 Single Sales, and her second on The Billboard Hot Club/Dance Play Charts.
