"Stand" is a song by R.E.M. released as the first single from Green in 1989. The song quickly rose up the charts, peaking at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming R.E.M.'s second top 10 hit in the United States. Only Losing My Religion, which reached #4 in 1991, has been a bigger pop hit in the U.S. for the band. The song reached #48 on the UK Singles Charts, becoming what was then R.E.M.'s biggest hit in the United Kingdom.

Peter Buck, soon after he had bought his first Wah-wah pedal, wrote the guitar chords in the studio to this song as a joke while the other three band members were at lunch. Buck had thought that he had created the dumbest guitar solo ever, but Michael Stipe loved it and decided to equal it in lyrics.

Stipe has said in interviews and documentaries that the song is for kids. It was meant as a fun song.

The lyrics are about noticing small things in everyday life that you pass everyday but never notice, like a parking lot. Stipe is saying that if you stand in different directions from places you frequently are, such as home and work, and actually look around, you will notice something you have never seen before.

, as "Spam".

Stand was used as the opening theme to the 1990 Fox comedy, Get a Life, starring Chris Elliott.

The song was placed on R.E.M.'s Warner Brothers "best of" album In Time - The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003 in 2003.
