Although the song "Swinging on a Star" is often associated with Frank Sinatra, its start came with Bing Crosby. About to film his 1944 Academy Award winning role in Going My Way
, Bing had songwriter Jimmy Van Heusen to his house for dinner one evening so they could discuss a possible song for the movie. During dinner, one of Bing's boys was acting up and complaining about not wanting to go to school the next day. Bing turned to the boy (possibly Gary) and said, "If you don't go to school, you might grow up to be a mule. Do you wanna do that?" Van Heusen liked the idea and thought it'd be perfect for the film. Bing, as a priest, could be talking to some kids acting like Bing's son. Van Heusen took the song idea to his writing partner, Johnny Burke, ("Misty", "Pennies from Heaven"), and the song was born. It went on to win the Best Song Academy Award that year. Frank also sang it and he went on to a partnership over the years with Van Heusen that produced many of Frank's hits like "All The Way", "Love and Marriage" and "High Hopes".
