The Accused is a 1988 dramatic film starring Jodie Foster and Kelly McGillis, directed by Jonathan Kaplan. The film was written by Tom Topor. The original music score is composed by Brad Fidel. Foster was awarded the 1988 Best Actress Oscar and Golden Globe Award for this film.

Plot summary

The story is about a working-class woman (played by Foster) with a loose reputation. One night in a bar, she is viciously gang-raped by several drunk bar patrons. A district attorney (played by McGillis) is assigned to the rape case. The trial that ensues argues the point that no matter how much sexual tension and teasing that had previously occurred during the night of the rape, the drunk patrons were guilty of the crime, not only for actually perpetrating the rape but also for encouraging the rape. The film is noted for the very realistic and traumatic rape scene.

It is one of the first Hollywood films to deal with rape in a forthright manner.

McGillis herself is a rape victim in real life.
Jodie Foster has commented in interviews that filming the gang-rape scene was ultimately hardest on the male actors involved, and that she made an effort to "cheer up" her castmates and help them to deal with the awful nature of the scene. Foster also claims she had blacked out during the scene.
Jodie Foster attended meetings of rape support groups and read stories of rape experiences in order for her to ready for her role.
This film is based on real-life gang rape that occurred at Big Dan's Bar in New Bedford, Massachusetts on March 6, 1983.
This film was shot on location in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
