The Buddha of Suburbia is classed as a soundtrack to a BBC series based on the book by Hanif Kureishi, though most of the content (indeed, all but the title track) was neither intended nor used in the series.

The title track was released as a single, leading some to confuse it with the album. The single featured both versions of the title track as well as "South Horizon" and "Dead Against It".
