Britney Spears’ hotly anticipated tour, in support of her fourth album "In the Zone", has been named the Onyx Hotel Tour and will kick off in San Diego on March 2nd 2004.

Britney’s set design will be based on the mysterious theory of the Onyx stone. The Onyx Hotel is a unique, mysterious hotel powered by an onyx stone. Each guest who enters this hotel shines their own light into the onyx, and in return, makes their fantasies come to life. It’s a vibrant, whimsical place where wondrous dreams are realized, and the darkest of secrets are revealed.

Britney expressed, “I’m especially looking forward to bringing my tour to new markets and performing in front of fans that may not have had the opportunity to see any of my previous tours.”

Britney is pleased to announce Kelis as a special guest on her tour. “’Milkshake ’ is one of my favorite new songs, and I am so excited that Kelis, who is so talented, has agreed to open the Onyx Hotel Tour for me.”

Summary

While Britney's last tour, "Dream Within A Dream" was Vegas-style theatrical, The Onyx Hotel Tour was more New York-style theatrical. This show was purposely less lavish than the previous tour and featured little pyro or flying but instead a very elaborate set filled with video screens and staircases. Britney and the tour's other creators viewed many different shows to get inspiration for the tour. The Onyx Hotel Tour was more intimate than Britney's previous tour. Most of the songs performed were from her then-current album, "In The Zone" but she also performed remixed versions of a few older hits. T he tour also showed a more mature Britney. While Britney has always been sexy, this was the first time fans saw her be sexual onstage in performances such as "Touch of My Hand" and "Breathe on Me". Many think the show did not top the Dream Within A Dream Tour and the tour received some bad reviews from critics, especially for Britney's lipsynching. The show in Miami was filmed for a special that aired on Showtime and attracted big ratings in fact even repeats of the special attracted big ratings for the parent network 5 months from it's original premiere. another Spears special called "Get In The Zone" faired similar success for the network as well.

During the show in Moline, IL, Britney fell during "Boom Boom," the second to last song, and injured her knee. Shows in Chicago and Detroit were postponed to the end of the first leg of the tour. The show in Cleveland was postponed to the summer leg because of illness.

The third leg of the tour, which would see Britney travel through North America for a second time and Asia for a first, was cancelled because of the injury resulting from a fall on the set of Britney's video shoot for "Outrageous" in Queens, NY. She underwent arthroscopic knee surgery at a New York hospital. The surgery was necessary to repair severe damage caused to the singer's leg by the incident.

Opening acts were Skye Sweetnam in the US and Europe, Kelis in the US and the final show in Dublin, JC Chasez in Europe, and Wicked Wisdom in Europe.

Performences and Controversies

The 2004 Onyx Hotel Tour brought new criticism. Britney and her dancers were seemingly nude and performing explicit routines simulating gay sex, orgies and masturbation during the songs "Touch of My Hand" and "Breathe on Me".

During the performance of Britney's masturbation ballad "Touch of My Hand", Britney came out on stage in a white robe, then after the second verse, she took it off to revel a seemingly nude, completely see-through skin-colored suit. She danced very suggestively in a clear bath tub, making sexual movements with her hand. At one point, she spread her legs far out and proceeded to simulate masturbation.

The performance of "Breathe on Me" wasn't any less sexual. The performance consisted of Britney on a bed making sexual movements that could be perceived as oral sex and shoe and foot fetishes. Later on in the performance she would makeout with her back up dancer Leo.

Given the fact that some underage fans were in the audience there was some outrage at the lack of subtlety of the performances. Reports of adult chaperones angrily storming out with children they brought to the concert were found in newspapers across the country.
