Actors - Todd Carty

Todd Carty (born August 31, 1963) is an Irish-British actor.

Personal life

Born in Limerick, Ireland in 1963, he grew up in Kilburn, North London. His first television appearance in the UK was in an advertisement for Woolworths at the age of four. He also had other advertising roles, including one with Doctor Who actor Jon Pertwee
.

Carty currently lives in North London with his childhood sweetheart and business partner, actress Dina Clarkin and their two sons James and Thomas.

Acting career

He made his first stage appearance at the New London Theatre, Drury Lane as the young Lionel in Lionel Bart's autobiographical musical, "Lionel"; however, his television career in his youth was mostly defined by his role as Tucker in the popular BBC drama, Grange Hill, who proved so popular that Carty was also the star of a spin-off series involving him, Tucker's Luck.

Carty took over the role of Mark Fowler in EastEnders in 1990, following the departure (and later suicide) of the original actor, David Scarboro
; this character was critically acclaimed as one of the first mainstream depictions of a HIV (and later AIDS) sufferer on British TV. Due in part to the popularity of EastEnders, Todd remained familiar to the British public (as evidenced by being the subject of a This Is Your Life show during these years), but this role came to an end in 2003 with the eventual death of Mark from an AIDS-related illness off-screen in 2004.

In 2003, he went on to play PC Gabriel Kent in The Bill, a character whose award-winning "bad guy" persona, characterised by rapes, murders and a case of pseudo-incest, was a major departure from the "nice guy" Mark Fowler. Despite the high-profile nature of the job, it was announced in 2005 that Todd was leaving The Bill. Carty exited the series in dramatic style, with his character leaping to his death from a high rise block of flats.

Since leaving the show, Todd does not seem to be considering a return to career acting, despite appearing in pantomimes and guest-starring in the Christmas special of Heartbeat. Instead, he and his partner have set up a production company, Swordfish Productions, and are focusing on selecting scripts for production.
